Christopher Sutton, PhD
I am a Professor of Geography and Geographic Information Systems at Western Illinois University, where I also serve as a Faculty Associate with the WIU GIS Center. My career is dedicated to advancing geographic and geospatial education and helping students develop the spatial thinking and technical skills needed to address complex real-world problems.
With expertise spanning cartography, spatial analysis, and geospatial technologies, I work at the intersection of traditional geographic principles and cutting-edge GIS applications. My particular research interests include coordinate systems and map projections, thematic mapping techniques, spatial data visualization, and the development of pedagogical approaches for teaching complex geospatial concepts..

I believe that effective GIS education requires both theoretical foundations and hands-on application. My teaching approach emphasizes progressive concept building—starting with fundamental principles and systematically advancing to sophisticated analytical techniques. I develop comprehensive educational materials, including digital textbooks, interactive tutorials, and real-world case studies, to ensure students can connect abstract concepts to practical applications.
-
My scholarly activities focus on:
Cartographic Theory and Practice: Exploring the principles of effective map design, visual hierarchy, and spatial communication
GIS Pedagogy: Creating innovative educational resources and instructional methodologies for geospatial education
Spatial Analysis Applications: Applying GIS techniques to diverse research problems across multiple domains
-
I am committed to making GIS resources accessible to students and practitioners, regularly developing tutorials and educational materials that help learners navigate the complexities of geospatial technologies.
