Class Projects

Experiential Learning is important in GIS

These projects highlight work completed by students in my Geographic Information Systems (GIS) courses using real-world data and applied problem-solving. Students designed and built interactive web maps, applications, and dashboards that address authentic implementations of GIS. They were involved in every stage of the project lifecycle, including data acquisition and preparation, selection of appropriate mapping and visualization techniques, and the design of clear, effective communication strategies for non-technical audiences. The resulting projects demonstrate both technical GIS skills and the ability to translate spatial data into accessible, meaningful information for the public.

In this 2023 course, GIS students created several web maps, apps, and dashboards related to the City of Macomb, Illinois. Work was conducted in consultation with Macomb Community Development Coordinator, Mr. John Bannon.

In this 2022 course, GIS students were assigned to work with constituent agencies in Adams County and the City of Quincy to create and publish GIS web maps related to the Adams County 2021 Community Needs Assessment. The class constructed a wide variety of maps related to housing, land use, socioeconomic data, transit, and historic preservation. They also created 3D maps for the City of Quincy.
